Welcome to Sunnyside Sports in Bend, Oregon. We've been the heart and soul of Central Oregon's nordic ski and cycling communities since 1972. Check out our time line, and then come in and meet our friendly staff...
On a recent mountain bike ride, staff felt compelled to creat a giant pile o' Sunnyside bikes. Left to right: Mike, Kathy, Don, Damian, Jody, Jeffrey, Chris, Eric, Susan, Seth, Russ, Barb, Jacob, Gary, Lew. (Not pictured: Jim) Dr. Don has been with Sunnyside since 1980. He’s the Big Cheese, the Last Word, and the Chief Buck-Stopper, and mega-blogger. Don does everything -- Mountain biking (He's current OBRA State Champion), road riding, ‘cross, classic and skate skiing, He’s a great coach, and he can tell you what to do in Spanish as well as English. If you’ve talked to Don, you probably know what he thinks, but if you're unsure, check out his blog at: http://donssunnysideblog.blogspot.com/ Or check out Don's review of his new Trek Fuel EX9.9
Gary's been the heart and soul of the shop since it's inception. Gary was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2003, and started the Tour des Chutes in 2005. Find Gary on his bike, counseling cancer patients,or turning wrenches. The Oregon Bicycle Transportation Alliance recently profiled Gary as a nominee for one of their Alice B. Toeclips awards. Read it here. Check Gary's Twitter updates here.
Queen Susan is a Sunnyside owner, with the shop since 1988. Susan is the store paper shuffler, and you will find her located behind the desk, tapping the keyboards. Susan is into road riding, running, and cross country skiing, and she’s also in charge of the check book, so don’t make her mad.
Mike is another Sunnyside owner, with us since 2000. Mike is the bike guy, and he makes the major calls on what bikes we sell here at Sunnyside. Talk to Mike if you want technical details, and check out his Twits on the front page, and his work behind the camera on our video pages. Check Mike's Twitter updates here.
You won't actually find Don's wife, Kathy, in the store. She's a musician by trade--Her most recent project being the performance and organization of the Tower Theater's "Monster Piano Concert." Perhaps someday you'll see her perform with the Sunnyside fantasy band, which would be made up of Jacob, Jeffrey, and Barb on guitar, Eric and Mike on drums, Damian on ukulele, Susan on violin, and Gary on piano. You might find Kathy on the trails with Don, as well, on bikes or skis.
Seth hails from Cuba, New York. Seth has a background in frame-building and welding, and drives around in a veggie-powered Dodge 350 pickup. You'll find Seth most mornings at the Lair, catching sweet air on his Yeti with loyal dog Elroy. Check out Seth's review of his new Trek Remedy 9.
Jim's the man behind the wall, the Wizard of Sunnyside, if you will. If you need an item ordered, it's Jim who does the job. If you have a defective product, that would be Jim, too. Our Handy-Man-in-Black races mountain bikes and cyclocross in his free time.
Jeffery has been with Sunnyside Sports since 1990. A veteran of 25 years in the bike business, he is our only “Schwinn Certified” mechanic. Jeffrey's true love is skate skiing, and he's the man to ask about skis and waxes. When he's not at work or skiing, you'll find Jeffrey driving his trusty Lazy Boy, catching up on his TV and reading, playing his guitar, or working in his shop.
No one pops a wheelie like our Jake. Catch him turning wrenches at the shop, or chasing his dog Taylor down the singletrack on his single-speed IF.
Barb has been with Sunnyside since she retired from full-time motherhood in 1990. Barb is a star mechanic, but she knows about a lot of other stuff, too. Ask her about cab driving in New York, or motorcycle-riding in Africa. Recognize Barb by her distinctive “rookie mark” tattoo on her left calf. Eric's a bike nut from Missouri. He rides 24-hour races, and has a garage full of crazy bikes. Talk to Eric about anything technical on your ride, or about raising a toddler. He knows a lot about both. We hired Chris as a temporary summer mechanic, but when the season was over, we couldn't let him go. Chris is an artist by trade--check his work out here--but when he busts out of his lonely studio he turns mean wrench.
Russ is the man around the shop since 2000. Don't let the hair scare you he has the heart of a mountain and knows the shop in-side-out. One of the many single speeder commuters in the shop.
One of the best downhillers in the area, Jody is way more bad-ass than she looks. Talk to her about all things bike-related, or art--she's a Parson's grad.
Damian's been hanging around the shop here since before he could grow that fabulous moustache, and we're glad to finally have him on staff. He races road and 'cross. Check out his blog at: http://www.twowheeldork.blog.com Muffy's been a fixture around the shop here for years, and we've finally put her on the payroll. Arguably our most accomplished athlete, Muffy is a household name here in Bend, as a result of multiple Pole Pedal Paddle wins. Not surprisingly, Muffy is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to bikes and skis, but you can also ask her about crafts, kids, and bread.
